The Free Town Center Trolley: How to Get Around The Woodlands Without Moving Your Car

The single most useful thing a visitor to The Woodlands can know is this: you can park once and stop driving. The Woodlands Township runs a free Town Center Trolley — vintage-styled, wheelchair-accessible, and genuinely useful — along an approximately 4.1-mile loop connecting the places you actually want to go.

There's no fare. No app purchase, no ticket, no tap. You get on.

Where It Goes

The route links the heart of Town Center:

• The Woodlands Mall
• Market Street — the open-air shopping and dining district
• The Woodlands Waterway and Waterway Square
• The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion
• Hughes Landing — the lakefront development with Restaurant Row

In March 2025 the Township added two new stops serving public parking areas near the Pavilion, including the Green Lot and special-event parking. That's the quiet game-changer: you can park in a free lot and ride in, rather than circling Town Center. The Green Lot also puts you within a short walk of the Riva Row Boat House, though you should check the live route map for the exact stop positions before you rely on one.

Hours — and the One Trap to Avoid

The trolleys run seven days a week, with no service on Thanksgiving, Christmas Day, or New Year's Day:

• Monday–Thursday: 11 a.m. – 9 p.m.
• Friday–Saturday: 10 a.m. – 10 p.m.
• Sunday: noon – 7 p.m.

Note the Sunday hours: the Township shifted them from 11 a.m.–6 p.m. to noon–7 p.m. in 2024, and plenty of third-party listings still show the old times. Don't turn up at a stop at 11 on a Sunday morning.

Here's the trap, and it catches concertgoers constantly: a typical Pavilion show starts at 7 or 8 p.m. and ends after the trolley has stopped running. On a Monday-through-Thursday night, service ends at 9 p.m.; on a Sunday, at 7 p.m. Don't plan on the trolley as your ride back from a headliner. It's excellent for getting to dinner and the venue — plan a walk, a rideshare, or your own car for the trip home.

Frequency and Live Tracking

Several trolleys operate at once. Township materials describe them circulating roughly every 10 minutes during peak operating hours, with fewer vehicles running during off-peak stretches (broadly the mid-afternoon lull, and later in the day on Sundays). There's no published departure timetable — the fleet circulates the loop, so "about every 10 minutes" is the number to plan around rather than a clock time.

You don't have to guess. The Township offers real-time trolley tracking on its transit website and via the Passio GO app, so you can see exactly where each trolley is before you walk to a stop. It's the difference between standing in the Texas heat and timing your walk to the minute.

Accessibility

Every trolley is wheelchair-accessible and ADA-compliant, with a number of collapsible seats and securements for passengers who need mobility assistance. The Township also offers ADA Complementary Paratransit for eligible riders who can't use the regular trolley — it's a curb-to-curb shared-ride service within a 3/4-mile radius of the trolley route, free to ride, bookable up to seven days ahead. How to Actually Use It (A Practical Plan)

Here's the pattern that works for most visitors:

1. Park free in one of the Town Center lots or garages — the Mall and Market Street garages are free, and there are free lots around the Pavilion. One important exception: on Pavilion show nights, the Mall and Market Street garages are reserved for their own customers and closed to concertgoers, and the free Pavilion lots don't open until 90 minutes before the show. 2. Check the live tracker, then walk to the nearest stop.
3. Ride to Market Street for shopping and lunch.
4. Hop back on to Waterway Square, walk the Waterway, or rent a kayak at Riva Row.
5. Ride to Hughes Landing for a lakefront dinner on Restaurant Row.
6. Head back — checking the clock, because of those evening cutoffs.

Why This Exists (and Why It's Unusual)

Free circulator transit in an American suburb is rare — most places this size expect you to drive between every parking lot. The trolley is a deliberate piece of The Woodlands' design philosophy: Town Center was built as a walkable downtown inside a car-dependent community, and the trolley is what stitches the walkable part together. Township materials put each vehicle's capacity at around 35 passengers.

The practical upshot for a visitor: The Woodlands Mall, Market Street, the Waterway, and Hughes Landing are close enough to feel like one district and far enough apart that walking between all of them in August heat is a bad idea. That's the gap the trolley fills.

Other Ways to Get Around

The trolley isn't the only option, and it's worth knowing the alternatives:

• On foot. The Waterway is a genuinely pleasant walk, lined with restaurants, public art, and the Alex Katz mural at Waterway Square. Hotels on the Waterway put most of Town Center within walking distance.
• By kayak. Not a joke — Riva Row Boat House sits on the Waterway, and paddling between Town Green Park and Lake Woodlands is a legitimate way to see the district.
• By bike. The Woodlands has 220 miles of connected hike-and-bike trails; check with your hotel about rentals.
• Rideshare or car. Necessary for anything outside Town Center — the villages, trail heads, and nature preserves are spread out.
• Airport. George Bush Intercontinental (IAH) is roughly 20 miles away; Hobby is considerably farther.
