Two Systems, Two Different Jobs
The Woodlands is a car community — there's no way around that. But the Township runs two genuinely useful transit services, and new residents routinely go years without discovering the second one.
- The Town Center Trolley — free, local, and built for getting around Town Center without parking twice.
- The Woodlands Express — a commuter bus that takes you to Houston, and the reason a meaningful number of residents don't drive down I-45 every morning.
They solve different problems. Here's how each actually works.
The Town Center Trolley (Free)
The Town Center Trolley is free — no fare, no ticket, no app purchase. It links Hughes Landing, Market Street, The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion, and The Woodlands Mall, and it runs daily.
Hours (published by the Township):
- Monday–Thursday: 11 a.m. – 9 p.m.
- Friday–Saturday: 10 a.m. – 10 p.m.
- Sunday: 12 p.m. (noon) – 7 p.m.
Note the Sunday start: noon, not 11 a.m. — a detail that catches out plenty of people, including some published guides.
Service does not run on Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, or New Year's Day.
A practical warning for concert nights: service ends at 9 p.m. Monday–Thursday and 10 p.m. Friday–Saturday — so for most evening shows, the trolley isn't running when the Pavilion lets out. It's excellent for getting to dinner and the venue; plan another way home.
You can track trolleys in real time on the Township's transit site rather than guessing at a stop. Trolleys are wheelchair-accessible and ADA-compliant, and the Township also offers ADA Complementary Paratransit for riders who can't use the fixed-route service — call (281) 210-3800 and ask for the Transportation Department.
The Woodlands Express (Commuter Bus to Houston)
This is the one that changes people's lives, and it's under-known. The Township operates a commuter bus service to four major Houston employment districts:
- Downtown
- Texas Medical Center — which now also includes the Museum District
- Greenway Plaza
- The Energy Corridor (served from the Sawdust lot)
There are also reverse-commute schedules for Downtown, the Medical Center, and Greenway Plaza — useful if you live in Houston and work here.
Service runs Monday through Friday, excluding designated holidays (New Year's Day, Good Friday, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Black Friday, Christmas Eve, and Christmas Day).
The Three Park & Rides
| Lot | Address |
|---|
| Research Forest Park & Ride | 3900 Marsico Place |
| Sterling Ridge Park & Ride | 8001 McBeth Way |
| Sawdust Park & Ride | 701 Westridge Road |
Key facts about the lots:
- Service hours are 5 a.m. to 9 p.m., and the access gates run on the same schedule — so don't plan on retrieving your car at 10 p.m.
- Overnight parking is not permitted without prior written permission from the Township.
- On-site security patrols the lots and can help with fare purchases, schedules, and route planning.
For a sense of how early the commute starts, here are the published departure times to the Texas Medical Center / Museum District:
- Sterling Ridge: 5:25 a.m., 6:45 a.m.
- Research Forest: 5:45 a.m., 6:15 a.m., 7:15 a.m.
- Sawdust: 6:10 a.m., 7:15 a.m.
Full schedules for each lot are published as PDFs on the Township's transit site — check them rather than relying on a summary, since they're revised periodically.
Fares: How to Pay (and How Not To)
The single most important rule: drivers do not accept cash. You must have a ticket or fare loaded before you board.
Your options:
- The WE TIX app (iOS and Android) — buy tickets with a credit/debit card or digital payment, then scan the QR code on the validator.
- The WE TIX Smart Card — a tap-and-go contactless card, available at any Park & Ride terminal. Smart Cards are currently free; the Township has said they will cost $2 each starting in 2027.
Both round-trip tickets and ticket books (20 round trips) are available.
A word on paper tickets — they're being phased out:
- Township-printed paper tickets will not be sold after December 31, 2026.
- They expire December 31, 2027 and won't be accepted for travel after that.
- Unused paper tickets can be converted to mobile fare or an account-based system until December 31, 2028.
- Paper tickets issued by Brazos Transit District or Montgomery County are not accepted at all.
Also note: The Township operates a no-refund policy. Purchases in the app or at a Park & Ride can't be changed, cancelled, or refunded.
Riding It Well
A few things the Township tells riders, and which regulars confirm:
- Arrive at least 15 minutes early. Buses fill on a first-come, first-served basis.
- A ticket is proof of payment, not a reservation. It doesn't guarantee you a seat on a specific bus.
- Buses only stop at designated locations.
- Track your bus in real time with The Woodlands Express GO app or the online tracker map.
- Sign up for Transit Alerts — weather and incidents affect service, and the alerts are the fastest warning.
- Missed your bus or need help? Call the service line: (832) 851-3362.
Seasonal and Special Services
The Township also runs occasional special services, including a Rodeo Express and a Soccer Shuttle — worth checking the transit site when those seasons come around.

The Bottom Line
Learn two things and you've got local transit figured out: the trolley is free and stops at 9 p.m. on weeknights (noon–7 p.m. Sundays), and the Express bus is a real alternative to the I-45 commute — but only if you buy fare before you board, because the driver won't take your cash.
Routes, hours, fares, and policies are set by The Woodlands Township and change periodically — schedules in particular are revised, so confirm current times on woodlandstransit.com before you rely on them. Township information line: (281) 210-3800.
